Featured Cairn

          Montgomery

Montgomery is a wonderful little dog.  When he came to CRUSA he had not been properly socialized.  However after spending several months in foster care with three other cairns, he has learned how to get along with others.   He rencelty met several new dogs and did quite well.  His foster Mom says that "SLOW, SLOW is the way to go!"  In other words, introductions should be slow so that Montgomery can learn to trust and feel comfortable in his new environment.

Montgomery is a very happy little chap and likes to play and go for walks.  He is well behaved and LOVES to sleep in his crate.  He goes right in it even when it is not bedtime.   This little guy is housetrained but occasionally has been known to mark in the house.   Montgomery is looking for a home where he can feel safe and be loved.

If you think you have a place in your heart and home for Montgomery or another rescued cairn, please consider filling out an application to adopt.   If you are interested in fostering or fostering to adopt, please email us.

Who's Who

Hi Gracie Magoo here!

This Who's Who is suppose to be about my mama Kathy Walker (AKA Chatty Kathy).   But I figure if it weren't for me she wouldn't even be here at Cairn Rescue USA.  So I decided I should be the Who's Who here.  My mama does a lot of Gracie gushing but I can gush about my own self without her help.  I'll dish a little dirt on her too just to make this more fun.  Here we go....

Me and my mama both like to say we were rescued by CRUSA.  I was rescued from the Holms County, OH puppy mill auction where my future was uncertain.   My mama was rescued from her sadness due to the loss of her 16 year old Cairn Annie, in October, 2004.  My mama searched high and low for 9 months for me.   She was even flabbergasted (had to look that one up) when she was rejected by another Cairn rescue because she owned two labs.  That's what they said anyway.  Mom was a bit miffed.  Then she found CRUSA, sent in her application and the very next day was contacted by Brenda Jo Kelley.   Now I am not bitter but she didn't originally apply for me but some other rescue... I think her name was Angel.  But she wasn't the right one for my mom and it didn't work out.  But later Miss BJ called mom about ME!   Back then I was known as Karla.  Mom was a little hesitant because she THOUGHT she wanted a Cairn that looked like Annie who was a beautiful wheaten color.  But I ain't no blonde!  I am a red brindle and ... Gushing Alert!... I am gorgeous!  Mom did some praying that night and the next day Miss BJ called my mom and was reading some papers of mine to her.   My doggie mommy's name was "Love Me Gracie".  Mom said "What?  I want to name my new love Gracie."  Miss BJ said "It's a sign!"  Little did Miss BJ know how hard my mama had been praying for a sign that I was the one.  OF COURSE I WAS THE ONE!

Now a little about myself.  I live in a big house in a little town called Crossett, Arkansas.  Best part is I have a big backyard with lots of squirrels.  I'm happy about that.  I live with Clover, a stray terrier mix, Pansy and Boo Boo, those dreaded labs that were also strays, and my big bad butt Cairn brother Yogi.   We all get along great but Yogi tries to beat Boo Boo up but he adores Yogi so it all works out.  I would have to say I am the favorite... the little princess.  I don't rub their noses in it but they all know it.   What can I say?  I'm adorable.   We also get to visit a lot with our 92 year old sweet Papaw and his sitters.  Papaw says "Clover give me the woo woo woo"  Clover starts to sing.  I don't sing so I do a little jumping dance.  Then Papaw says "give MY dogs a puppy biscuit."    The are quite yummy and we try to repeat the performance to get more.

Now the dirt on my mama and a little on daddy too.  The first met as young pups when they worked as accountants at Georgia-Pacific Corporation.  Mom says he kept chasing her around the Xerox machine.  I think I heard the words immature and obnoxious when she tells this story.  My dad says 12 times of asking her out with no luck was his limit.   He had SOME pride!  Lucky for both of them she finally said OK and in October this year they will be married 25 years.  Imagine that!    During that time, they only had furry kids like me - there was Ernie, Annie, and of course the rest of us!

For those of you who want to know the "down and dirty" dirt on mama here you go.  If you ask her what her hobbies are she would say working in the yard, reading, cooking and shopping.  Huh?  I ain't never seen her read a book nor work in the yard.  My dad doesn't get to see her cook much either.  But shopping... well I got that one figured out. She loves to watch this TV show called QVC ... I think it stands for Quality Valued Crap.  She watches it all the time and next thing I know this guy in a big brown truck called UPS (learned early all dogs have to hate this guy) comes to our door.  I think UPS is United Puppies Snarl cause that's what I was taught to do.   I digress.  These boxes make mom so happy.  Then there's that little pink drink at 5:30.  That also makes her happy... real happy.   She switched off QVC and is watching Food Network and working on CRUSA stuff.   Many times she has a huge grin on her face but sometimes she cries.  I hate when mama cries.  "For gosh sakes get up and get another of those pretty pink drinks... they make you happy."

Now for some mom gushing.  I am proud of the work that she does as a shelter caller for CRUSA.  Other's helped me so she now gives back in her time and money to help save others like me.   Here's something you might not know.  Mom and dad plan to buy a CRUSA Mobile and become  "transport extraordinaires" (another word I had to look up).  I'll be there to help too cause I'm like a VISA card - they just can't leave home without me!

Time to go... guess I'm a bit like my mommy - Chatty - Chatty Gracie.  I like it.  She and I were looking so hard to find each other and CRUSA helped us find each other.   There are so many more like me that are still out there looking for a home.  If you haven't already, go find your match.  It's woo - woo- nderful.  Guess I'm so happy I CAN sing!   Oh boy just look at us now!  We're the Who's Who of CRUSA!  Whoo Whoo! (oooh I did it again!)

Love Gracie

Dear Dotty,

Dear Dotty,

I want to foster but am not sure that I am up to the task.

Signed - Unsure

Dear Unsure,

Fostering is a very rewarding experience.  Some fosters require a little extra attention and time but many just fall right into your own pack's routine in a matter of days.

Some people hesitate to foster because of the fear they will want to keep the dog.  Although that does happen, more often than not you will find that once you know that the dog's forever home is a great one, it makes it a lot easier to let go.

Without foster homes, we could not continue our mission to rescue and rehabilitate Cairns in need.   The foster home is an essential part of the cycle.   Cairn Rescue USA pays for all pre-approved expenses for our fosters.   Any expenses food, leashes, etc. that the foster home chooses to pay for out of pocket is totally tax deductible.

If you decide to become a foster, we have a support staff in place to offer you mentoring when you need a little assistance.   You will be assigned a person who will be there for you if you need a little guidance.

If you are interested in fostering, please let us know by sending an email to Shell Lewis our VP of Foster Homes  > bluegal53@aol.com.  You'll be glad you did!

Dotty

Dear Dotty,

I just adopted a puppy from CRUSA.  How soon can I have him neutered?

New Mom

Dear Mom,
Generally when a dog reaches 6 months he can be neutered.   Of course your vet would have the final say on if the dog is ready or not.

Thanks for asking!
Dotty

Caring for Cairns

"Fall 2006 Raffle"

Cairn Rescue USA is proud to announce our first ever Caring for Cairns Raffle.  We have 81 different prizes.  There is something to please everyone.  We have autographed NASCAR caps, custom made Woof and Famous coats,  Harley Davidson collectibles, hand made Cairn greeting cards, several gift certificates including Home Depot, Woof and Famous, Sears and Walmart and so much more!   Raffle tickets are $10 each.   Please be sure to tell all your family and friends about the raffle.   Many of the prizes would make great holiday gifts   The drawing will be on October 14 at Cairnfest.  Please make sure you get your entries in well in advance of that date!

This year at Cairn Rescue USA has been our biggest year yet.   We continue to take in cairns at an increasing rate over previous years.   Many of our cairns are rescues from puppy mills.   These dogs, especially those who were used repeatedly for breeding, often require extensive medical care.   They come to CRUSA badly matted, filthy, not neutered, with rotten teeth and many other health issues.   They lived in small cramped cages and ate the cheapest possible food.  They eliminated in the same place they slept.  Many millers would just as soon kill a dog as provide it needed medial care.  The primary reason for this is that vet care is expensive and any money spent on the dogs would take away from the miller's profits.   This means that the dogs never receive heart worm preventative, flea and tick preventative, vaccinations, grooming and teeth cleanings.   Look into the eyes of your beloved furbaby.  Think about it if you never did any of these things for your dog.  If you never brushed it, never gave it a bath and never let it out of a cage.   Perhaps your baby was a former mill dog.  If CRUSA is to continue with its mission of saving cairns in need, we need your help.  With the many puppy mill rescues requiring extensive medical care, our funds are all but exhausted.  Please help us by buying a few raffle tickets (or check out the calendar).   Tell your family and friends about the fundraisers too.   Every purchase helps!

Recycle to Save Lives

recycle symbol                                           ink cartridge clipart

We are going to run this again as each month it seems someone else contacts us to help with the effort.

Did you know that you can turn those old ink cartridges into cash for CRUSA?   Each used ink cartridge can be worth up to $2 for CRUSA.   We are launching an ongoing fundraising effort to collect used ink and laser cartridges as well as old digital cell phones.   Supporting CRUSA's efforts for fundraising has never been easier.  All you have to do to participate is contact Lisa, our VP of Fundraising and she will send you some bags that you can fill with your used ink cartridges.  Once a bag is full, just drop it in the mail.  The postage is paid by the recycling company.  It's really that easy.   If you have laser cartridges or digital cell phones, the recycling company also pays CRUSA for these but the shipping requirements are different.    If you regularly use laser cartridges or have a cell phone, contact Lisa for more information on the collection process.

If you want to help, here are some ideas how you can collect more ink cartridges:

- Ask friends and family to save them for you.

- Post a sign in your office with a collection box or other places you frequent like Curves, the grocery store, etc.

- Ask your vet if they will let you post a sign and some bags on their bulletin board.  Also, ask your vet if they will collect them for you as they print a lot and use a lot of ink.

- Get your kids involved in the program by collecting at school.

- Post a "Wanted" ad on your local FREECYCLE yahoo group. (Visit http://www.freecycle.org/ ).  If you do this, we recommend you get their mailing address and a bag can be sent to their home.  Traveling around to pick up one or two ink cartridges is not time or cost effective.

The program benefits CRUSA but also saves the environment by keeping this plastic out of our landfills.  Not all cartridges can be recycled but most popular brands except Epson can.
