Sweet little Jeena was recently
rescued from a puppy mill. She spent her entire life in a
small cage producing puppies to be sold for profit in pet
stores. When Jeena first arrived in her foster home she was
extremely frightened of every new sight and sound and she
couldn’t climb stairs. She was severely matted, so her hair
had to be shaved, but when it grows back she will be a
beautiful wheaton color.
Jeena has quickly adapted to her new life of freedom and
everyday a new facet of her cute personality emerges as she
becomes comfortable in her foster home. Jeena is happy and
friendly and she gets along great with other small dogs.
Although she came from a puppy mill, she is doing remarkably
well with potty training and always goes when taken outside.
She is a very petite little girl, weighing only 12 pounds. She
will do great in a quiet home, with another small, gentle dog
to play with. Jeena is a very affectionate, cuddly little girl
who will make an excellent companion for some lucky family.
If you think you
have a place in your heart and home for Jeena or another
rescued cairn, please consider filling out an application to adopt. If you are
interested in fostering or fostering to adopt, please
email us. | |

Who's Who
Dr. Lawrence Giebel started his
veterinary career when he graduated from Ohio State
University School of Veterinary Medicine (GO BUCKEYES!).
He has been treating Potomac and Gaithersburg Maryland area
pets for many years. When he started his
practice, the Quince Orchard Animal Hospital, he was located
in a small store front. Over time, his business
demands grew and he built a large building that houses full
service vet care with two other vets and approximately 15
administrative staff.
Dr. Giebel has always been very
supportive of rescued animals and donates many hours of vet
care each year to the local Montgomery County Animal
Shelter. He also supports rescue groups like
Cairn Rescue USA by providing greatly discounted rates for
services performed.
Dr. Giebel has been treating pets in
Robby's family (Robby was adopted by Lisa S, our VP of
Fundraising) since 1979. One day while Robby was
making a routine visit, Lisa mentioned Missy, a puppy mill
rescue, and her hernia. Missy had a tennis ball
size hernia in her groin area and was waiting to get in to
see a specialist who was to perform the surgery. Dr.
Giebel, became immediately concerned when he heard of
Missy's condition and asked that the foster Mom - Debbie H.
- be contacted. After talking to Debbie, he offered to
do the surgery later that day. Missy spent over 3
hours on the table while Dr. Giebel worked carefully to pull
her intestines back out of the hernia in her groin and into
her belly were they belonged. While there, he
also spayed her so that she could no longer be used for
breeding. Dr. Giebel explained that this type of
hernia was very dangerous and thus it was essential to
correct it as soon as possible.
Dr. Giebel is a wonderful man who makes
each client feel like they are special. He's the
kind of vet who will give you his home number and tell you
its ok to call in the middle of the night. When a pet
goes home after a procedure, he will call at night to "tuck
you in" and make sure the pet is doing well. He
balances providing the medical care his pet clients need
with the comfort his human clients needs. One
might say he has an excellent bed side manner.
Dr. Giebel also treats birds, reptiles and small pets in
addition to cats and dogs.
A big thank you to Dr. Giebel for helping
Missy!

Dear Dotty,
Dear
Dotty,
My adopted dog doesn't seem interested in toys.
Is something wrong?
New Mother
Dear
New,
Some of our rescues come
from puppy mills where they never have access to toys.
It is possible that your newly adopted Cairn has not
learned that playing with a toy can be fun.
Consider taking your dog to the local PetSmart
where you can shop with him. Select a toy that he
does show some interest in. Then get down on the
floor and encourage play. Over time, the dog may
learn that play is fun and enjoy a toy alone.

Caring for Cairns
"Fall 2006 Raffle- Winners"
Cairn Rescue USA just
wrapped up its first Caring for Cairns Raffle. This
fundraising effort was a real success. We had a lot of
interest in the raffle prizes and raised over
$6350 to help
rescue more Cairn Terriers. Lisa Stine was the
winner of the prize for most tickets sold with Brenda Kelley
coming in a close second. Kathy Walker tried to
overtake both of these two buy purchasing a LOT of tickets and
naming herself as the referral! Thanks to so many people
for donating items, selling tickets and of course buying tickets
in our first ever raffle. This was so successful
we'll be doing it again real soon!

Cairnfest 2006
This year's Cairnfest
was held in Princeton Junction, NJ. The the
weather was almost perfect given the early fall date - October
14th. We had some windy moments that sent some things
flying into the air. But over all a great time was had
by all. As visitors arrived, they were greeted by
many cairns. As each visitor arrived bringing more
and more dogs, it became a real event. We had
attendees from the New Jersey and New York area. We also
had attendees who traveled from Washington, Kentucky,
Illinois, Maryland and Pennsylvania. All but two
of our board members were in attendance.
The day involved a lot
of play with the new puppies rescued from the mill and
laughing at the antics of the many cairns playing in the yard.
Woof and Famous - Marybeth - set up shop in the back of the
lawn and offered some really unique and wonderful items for
sale. She had some terrific outfits for dogs.
She also had some special Cairnfest exclusive embroidered
items. Lisa and Kathy also had several tables
offering items donated by others and things Lisa had made as
fundraisers.
Mid-afternoon, when
the sun started to set, we moved the event inside to hold the
live auction. There we auctioned off many donated
items including several nicely framed and matted prints of
cairns. There was a wonderful basket donated by
Pat H that included a dog bed, leashes, collars, cookies,
treats and so much more. One of the most popular
items was the INP blanket. It was made by our very own
BJ. All items made by BJ are under the label "INP"
aka "I'm Not Perfect." We sold Wizard of Oz items Linda
S as well as Lisa S. Many people snatched up good
bargains in anticipation of the upcoming holidays.
Following the auction,
we drew the names for the raffle. BJ pulled names from
the bag and Kathy carefully recorded each name.
The first name out of the bag was Helen D. She had her
first prize listed as the quilted cairn purse. She was
thrilled when we told her that the item was at Cairnfest and
she would get to take it home with her. Violetta
and her mother Liberty won a few prizes and Liberty was so
busy feeding all the people and dogs that she didn't even
notice her name being called. She was thrilled when we
got her attention to tell her. Kathy W. was also a
big winner. Kathy had bought A LOT of tickets in an
effort to support the event. She wanted to treat herself
and CRUSA as her birthday was the same day as Cairnfest.
She ended up winning quite a few prizes too. She says
she does not plan to keep all the prizes but rather plans to
give them as gifts. One of the most sought after
prizes - Suzanne Renaud's painting "Balloons" - was won by
one of the folks BJ sold a ticket to. BJ offered to take
the painting home to her but many were suspect that she would
keep the prize for herself!
