Featured Cairn

Sophia is a lovely little lady.  Unfortunately for Sophia she is blind at 12 years old.   Sophia's eyes were examined and it was determined that she has glaucoma.   Since it went untreated for so long, medication can not relieve the constant pressure and pain Sophia is feeling.   CRUSA is currently raising funds to provide Sophia with much needed surgery to relieve her pain.   The surgery involves removing the inside of her eyes and replacing it with silicone.  Since Sophia is already blind, this procedure will only benefit her by removing her pain.  After surgery, she will look much like she does in the above picture.

Sophia currently lives in a foster home with 13 other dogs some of them much larger than her.  She does quite well getting around and likes the companionship of her foster siblings.   Her foster Mom says she is the sweetest little thing and she likes to snuggle.

If you are interested in helping with Sophia's surgery, please contact Lisa, our VP of Fundraising or Linda, Sophia's foster Mom.    If you think you have a place in your heart and home for Sophia, please consider filling out an application to adopt.

Who's Who

This article's featured volunteer is Jodi Hewitt. Jodi lives in Columbia, Maryland and is a fairly new volunteer with CRUSA.  She jumped in with both feet by fostering two dogs already.  When Max her most recent foster went to his forever home, she graciously volunteered to take Pudgy and Cheeka, a brother and sister pair who are coming in from Massachusetts.

Jodi got involved with CRUSA after researching rescue for almost a year.  She checked out the websites, visited dog shows and finally talked with a representative from CRUSA before making the commitment.

Jodi has a cairn of her own - Misty.  Misty, who was named for her "misty" looking coat, is now a westie in disguise according to her Mom.   She lost most of the color as she grew and is now the lightest wheaten one could ever find.   Aside from color, Misty's Mom says that Misty got left out when it came to dolling out cairn-tude as Misty acts more like a golden retriever.   Misty was purchased from a breeder.  However, after learning more from her rescue contacts, Jodi feels that it was probably an undercover puppy mill.

Jodi works as the Controller for Salco Mechanical Contractors in Rockville, MD.  In her off hours, she likes to do Duckpin bowling and is on two leagues and plays in a national tour.  Duckpins is a game that originated in the Washington / Baltimore area.  It is similar to bowling but the pins are much smaller.  In addition, the ball, much like a bocce ball, has no holes and is smaller than a typical bowling ball.   The rules of the game are also different.

Jodi recently joined other CRUSA members at the Scottish Festival in Virginia.   While there she talked to lots of folks and shared her fostering experiences.   We are happy to have her as a new volunteer.

Dear Dotty,

Dear Dotty,

My new cairn has some bad habits - jumping, getting on tables, barking, etc.  Other than yelling is there some way I can correct him?

Yelling Mom

Dear Yelling,

Consider using a squirt bottle filled with water.  Most cairns don't like being squirted.  Once your dog gets use to this correction, a simple shake of the bottle may do the trick.

Dear Dotty,

My cairn rides really well in the car on long trips but seems to get an upset stomach on around town trips.  Why is this happening?

Upset Mom

Dear Upset,

Your cairn may not be able to tolerate the stop and go traffic.   When you are on long trips, highway driving is fairly constant and the car does not rock back and forth.   Try taking your dog for more around town trips so that he can get use to it.   Otherwise, consider leaving your pooch at home unless you are going away for a trip or to the vet, of course.

FUNDRAISING

If you order anything online and we don't have a link to the vendor you use, either directly or through the IGIVE link, contact CRUSA our VP of Fundraising.   Lisa will work with your favorite online vendors to see if we can join their affiliate program.  We have added some new vendors to our affiliate page.   Click here to see our current affiliates.

We will soon be launching a section of the Curiosity Shoppe where you will be able to purchase greeting cards with pictures of our cairns on them.  Stay tuned for that announcement.  Until then, visit the Curiosity Shoppe to see all the other wonderful items we offer.

No Place Like (a Forever) Home

Remember Wyatt?  He was one of our calendar dogs last year.  He was fostered by Debbie H. in Maryland and adopted by Chandra C. in Virginia.  He and his forever family dropped by the Cairn Rescue booth at the Scottish Festival.  Wyatt was doing quite well and looked very happy.

Scottish Games and Hot Dogs!

The 23rd Annual Virginia Scottish Games and Festival was held in Alexandria, Virginia on July 23 & 24.  Veronica,  our VP of Website Content, planned to attend the festival to raise awareness about the Cairn Terrier and various rescues.  About two weeks before the event, she graciously invited some other CRUSA members to join her.   We were told this would be an excellent opportunity to recruit volunteers, communicate to the public about the cairn and raise funds.   So one by one, members of CRUSA in the local area began volunteering to spend their day working the crowd.

Lisa, our VP of Fundraising, was not going to miss this opportunity to sell items and raise much needed funds.  So she began to work on an inventory.   Lisa worked each day, late into the evening, creating items that might attract not only the cairn owner or the Scotsman but also the general public.   By the time the festival began, we had an inventory that included: t-shirts, aprons, calendars, key chains, buttons, tote bags, memo pads, greeting cards, cairn statues, dog toys, rawhides, door mats, lanyards, bottle openers, wall signs, and more!

The day of the festival, Jodi H, a newer member to CRUSA (see Who's Who), Debbie H, Lisa and Linda met for the ride to the festival.   We were all given complementary tickets thanks to Westie Rescue.  However, our complementary parking pass was only good for Sunday.  Lisa, having always been very persuasive, drove up to the policeman guarding the entrance.  She gave him her CRUSA business card, the tickets and the parking pass.  She explained that we were packing a ton of stuff and there must have been an error on the parking pass as we were to arrive today and not Sunday.   He was quickly won over allowed her to enter the parking area.  Once in, we located Veronica's tent and flagged down a golf cart to carry our load to the tent.

Set up began by unpacking and organizing the inventory.  It was a blazing hot day and this simple task was difficult to do.   We had so many items to display that we ended up putting some on a blanket on the ground.   Shortly after arrival we made our first sale, a tartan bandana.

We had three dogs,  Veronica had two and Lisa brought Robby.   It was very hot for the little dogs but there was a dog pool available for them to cool off in from time to time.    Robby enjoyed visits all day from little people including babies.   He was a big hit with his two little white feet!

Debbie actively recruited foster homes and potential adopters while Linda worked the crowd for donations for Sophia's surgery.  Jodi was the photographer and took several pictures of the activities going on both in and out of our tent.   She also talked to people about the joy of fostering.

At the end of the day, sales had not been that great.  However, Debbie reported that we had several serious leads on foster homes and volunteers.   We all agreed that it was a good day despite the blazing heat.

On the ride home, Debbie and Lisa decided to return the following day too.  After all we had a parking pass for Sunday.   Sunday was the day of the dog games and we felt that the traffic would be more likely to shop and potentially volunteer.

When the games began, all the Westies and Scotties lined up to run.  However, there were only three cairns present.   Robby and Tavish, Veronica's dog entered the races.   Robby and Tavish both won three blue ribbons.   After the races, we all walked the dogs in a parade through the stadium and around the vendor stands.   Again the heat was blazing down on everyone and all the dogs were very hot.   Once we returned to the tent, all the dogs took turns getting into the doggie pool.

The day resulted in more sales but of less expensive items.  In the end, we declared it a victory.  We handed out a lot of information about CRUSA and made some money too.

We have already requested to march in the Scottish Christmas Parade in December and we plan to go to the festival next month.

Photo Contest

Say Cheese!

Ever snap a photo and think "Now that's one cute picture!"?  Want to show off your talent or your cairn?   We are having our first photo contest.  What's the prize you ask?  Your photo will be featured on one of the months for our 2006 CRUSA calendar.  These calendars are offered through cafepress which is linked to via our Curiosity Shoppe.

The following guidelines will help you to take a terrific photo:

  • consider the background - avoid clutter, consider getting your cairn to stand in front of flowers or some other attractive background.
  • get your cairn's attention before snapping the photo - having your do looking at the camera generally makes a much better shot - not always - but folks like to see those cute little faces.
  • stage the picture - add things like pumpkins, straw and leaves to gain a feeling of Fall.
  • don't chop off their feet or tail - if you are not taking a close up facial shot, try to include feet and tails - a perfect picture can be ruined if the feet are missing.
  • center the subject - make sure your cairn(s) are in the center of the photo - too much of nothing on one side makes for an odd picture - sometimes cropping these type of pictures are possible.
  • take high quality digital photos - calendar pages are pretty big and even the cutest photo can not be used if it is low quality as it will be blurry when enlarged.
  • take landscape shots - calendar photos are best when taken landscape - if taken the other direction, there is a lot of white space on the calendar page - (this does not mean you can not enter a picture taken the other way.)
  • consider the lighting in your photo - photos that are too dark or too light will not make good calendar choices.
  • take several photos of the same thing - then pick the one you like best - photos that appear to be clear in the LCD of the camera are sometimes surprisingly blurry on the computer.
  • consider a theme - if you are interested in your cairn being in December - shoot festive holiday photos, in July shoot a beach scene, in the spring, shoot flowers, etc.
  • have fun - make sure you and your cairn enjoy the time you spend together and reward him/her for good behavior with a favorite treat.

The following are the rules of the contest:

  • all photos must be submitted before September 15, 2005.
  • each person may enter no more than 4 photos.
  • photos must include cairns you own or have fostered in the past.
  • photos must be original and taken by you.
  • by entering the contest, you agree that CRUSA has the right to use your photo in its fundraising efforts by including it in the calendar or other items such as greeting cards, clothing, etc.
  • the winner will be announced in the September issue of the CRUSA Chronicles.

Who's Who Update

Remember last month's Who's Who, Anne?  When we introduced her to you, she was going to be marrying Ben.  Well they have officially tied the knot.   Anne reports that her wedding was flawless and the food fabulous.   She and Ben worked very hard to incorporate their beliefs into the day.  This included a beautiful Jewish wedding and vegan food at the reception.   The wedding cake was a mouth watering red velvet.  Anne wanted to share some of her photos with everyone at CRUSA but she and Ben don't yet have them.   However, she was able to send us this wonderful picture of Ben and Anne in Vancouver on their honeymoon.   They make such a lovely couple!   Congratulations and best wishes for your new life together.
